The Dugout Door: A Summer of Servant Leadership and Dreams in the Making

This summer, I had the joy of witnessing something truly special—not in a boardroom or coaching session, but on a baseball field in Tomball, Texas.

My 10-year-old son, Julian, lived out a dream that many kids only imagine: he became the official bat boy for the Banditos collegiate baseball team.

It all began with a simple invitation to attend the first game of a summer tournament. Julian—full of curiosity and passion—chose to sit close to the dugout. And as I watched him lean in, I felt that nudge in my heart. I asked the coach a simple question:

“Can he go inside and just watch?”

That question opened the door to something much greater. What started as a chance to observe quickly turned into a full-time summer opportunity. Julian stepped into it with joy, humility, and responsibility.

A Lesson in Leadership: Show Up Prepared

Julian may have been the youngest one on the field, but he showed up like a pro. Double-header days in 100-degree heat didn’t scare him. He packed cool drinks, healthy snacks, and meals to stay energized. He understood that if you want to be part of something big, you have to be prepared—mind, body, and spirit.

Just like in business or leadership, it wasn’t only about talent. It was about presence. It was about effort. It was about having the right mindset—even when you’re the smallest one in the dugout.

My Role: A Mother’s Heart, A Servant Leader’s Steps

As Julian’s mom, my role went far beyond being a spectator. I showed up as a servant leader in his life. I supported him quietly but intentionally. I helped him stay nourished and focused. I prayed for his safety, growth, and joy in this season. I taught him what it means to be part of something greater than yourself.

I didn’t tell him what to do; I walked beside him until he found his rhythm.

In our family, in our business, and in the lives we lead, this is what true leadership looks like. Opening doors. Being prepared. Lifting others. Serving first.

Where Will This Take Him?

We don’t yet know where this experience will lead. Maybe a lifelong passion for sports. Maybe new friendships, skills, or dreams that are still taking shape. Only God knows the path ahead.

But I do know this: Julian will never forget the summer of 2025.

And neither will I.

A Final Word to Fellow Leaders and Parents

Whether you're running a company, coaching a team, or raising a child, remember this:

  • When you love something, go after it.

  • When someone shows potential, open the door for them.

  • When the journey begins, show up prepared—with faith, humility, and grit.

The dugout may have looked small, but the lessons? They were life-changing.
